Description

The painting captures the powerful beauty of a waterfall plunging, foaming and thundering, from the rocks into the depths. Vigorous brushstrokes convey the collision of water and stone, while the subtle nuances of coloring underscore the contrast between the force of the current and the calm surfaces of the surroundings. The eye is inevitably drawn into the movement, so that an almost physical presence of the force of nature unfolds.

The work dates from the Taisho or Showa period and is painted on silk, which lends the water a soft, vivid sheen. The signature and seal of Yamamoto Shunkyo, an important painter of the Nihonga tradition, point to the painting's deep roots in classical Japanese aesthetics. The jikusaki made of bone furthermore lend the hanging scroll a high-quality and authentic finish.

This depiction combines monumental depiction of nature with a sense of atmospheric emptiness that invites the viewer to inner contemplation. A work of art that unites power, dynamism, and meditative calm in a single image, and captivates as a unique example of the Japanese tradition of painting.
