Description
Above bands of clouds rises the snow-covered peak of Mount Fuji, while in the valley below a small village can be seen amid blossoming trees – a composition that connects Japan's most famous mountain with a quiet, almost idyllic everyday scene.
The delicate pink blossom clouds in the lower part of the image contrast effectively with the cool blue-gray of Mount Fuji and the warm ochre tones of the sky, while small figures on a path between the houses bring the image to life. Created in the Shôwa period on silk, the painting is signed; the jikusaki ends are made of ceramics.
As a symbol of permanence, sublimity, and national identity, Mount Fuji is one of Japan's most frequently painted motifs and is still associated with prosperity and long life today. This kakemono combines the monumentality of the mountain with the lightness of blossoming nature.
