Description

Between gnarled, picturesquely branched pines, the brightly red roofs and gates of a shrine complex rise on this colorful kakemono, while in the background the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji softly shimmers through the haze. Warm yellow and orange tones in the sky lend the scene an almost festive, reverent mood.

Above the motif are placed handwritten verses referring to a poem by Emperor Meiji – a reference to the close connection between landscape, Shintō belief, and imperial poetry in Japanese culture. The combination of Fuji, pines, and shrine is among the most beloved and venerable pictorial motifs of Japan.

The work is painted on silk, the jikusaki is made of wood, created in the Shōwa period. With its warm coloring and venerable symbolism, this kakemono, Pines and Shrine Before Mount Fuji, is a particularly representative choice for lovers of classical Japanese landscape painting.
