Kakemono Two Wanderers Under Blossoming Trees at a Gate

This landscape miniature comes together in a delicate, almost playful way: beneath two blossoming trees with dabs of pink blossoms, a narrow path leads to a roofed temple gate with green tiles, toward which two tiny figures in hats are walking. The loosely applied ink cloud in the background and the delicately placed touches of color lend the scene a dreamlike, almost poetic mood.

The reduced, impressionistic painting style leaves ample room for the viewer's imagination and recalls the tradition of literary landscape painting, in which the grandeur of nature deliberately makes the human figure appear small. Every detail – from the gnarled tree trunk to the barely visible wanderers – has been rendered with a calm hand.

The painting bears the signature and seal of Seizumi and was created in the Shôwa period.

Painted on paper and fitted with a jikusaki of wood, this hand-painted unique work is a quiet, poetic piece of Japanese landscape art, titled Two Wanderers Under Blossoming Trees at a Gate.
