Description

Fine, almost translucent ink washes bring to life a landscape in pouring rain on this hanging scroll. Gentle hill ranges dissolve into hazy gray, while in the foreground a densely overgrown shoreline emerges from the mist with stronger, darker brushstrokes, lending depth to the composition.

The art of suggestion so characteristic of Japanese landscape painting is especially evident here: barely visible lines running diagonally across the picture convey the impression of falling rain without depicting it directly. The entire scene thereby appears moist, soft, and in motion.

Painted on paper and mounted in muted brocade fabric with a blue border pattern, with wooden roller rods, this kakemono dates from the Shôwa period. The painter's signature and red seal are found in the lower right corner of the picture. An evocative unique work for collectors of atmospheric ink landscapes.
