Description
Mounted samurai charge through hilly grassland with bows drawn, while a flock of birds passes over the scene in the background - this pair of hanging scrolls leads into the dramatic world of Japanese warrior depictions. Fine details in armor, horse tack, and landscape attest to great painterly precision and a trained sense of movement.
Both kakemono together form a single scene and bear the signature and seal of Tosa Mitsuzane, a name that points to the venerable Tosa school, which has devoted itself for centuries to Yamato-e painting and historical narrative subjects. Battle and equestrian scenes such as this were among the favored motifs of courtly and military patrons.
Painted on silk, fitted with roller knobs made of bone, and delivered together with the accompanying wooden box, this duo forms an impressive ensemble for collectors of historical Japanese painting and for all who are enthusiastic about the iconography of the samurai.
