Description

On this finely executed kakemono, a scholar and his young companion cross a narrow, roofed wooden bridge, surrounded by gnarled pines, rugged rocks, and a mountain landscape blurred by mist. The restrained coloring in earthy gray and brown tones, interrupted only by the glowing red of the boy's robe, deliberately draws the eye to the two figures.

Such scholar landscapes take up a theme adopted from Chinese painting that celebrates retreat into nature and contemplation apart from urban life. The fine details of the architecture and vegetation, set down with a calm hand, testify to great craftsmanship.

The motif is painted on paper, the jikusaki is made of wood, created in the Meiji period. As an antique with a calm, contemplative visual language, this kakemono, Scholar on the Mountain Bridge, is a particularly appealing choice for collectors of traditional East Asian landscape painting.
