Description

With wings spread, a small sparrow approaches the dense needles of a pine tree, whose fine, sketch-like branches run across the entire pictorial surface. The reduced color palette of warm brown tones and the spontaneous brushwork lend the scene great vividness and movement.

This kakemono was hand-painted on paper in the Shôwa period; the jikusaki is made of wood and fits fittingly into the classic hanging scroll mounting.

Pine and bird are among the most popular pairs of motifs in Japanese painting, with the evergreen pine representing permanence and long life, while the bird symbolizes lightness and freedom. Those interested in the pictorial connection of nature and symbolism will find in this hand-painted unique work an evocative piece of Japanese art history, wonderfully suited as a decorative eye-catcher.
