Description

Two hanging scrolls that complement each other to form an evocative pair of seasons: one scroll shows a mist-wreathed pine rock with a blossoming plum tree, an emblem of spring, while the second scroll depicts the same landscape in autumn, with foliage turned red and a small sailboat gliding through the hazy pictorial space.

Mist-shrouded mountains in the background join both compositions into a harmonious unity and point to the constant change of the seasons, a central theme of classical Japanese landscape painting. The restrained wash, kept in fine tones of gray, lets the floral and autumnal accents of color have all the more effect.

Both sheets bear the signature and seal of Kano Isenin Eishin and are elaborately mounted on gold-colored brocade with a blue border. As a matching set, the two kakemono unfold their full effect only when hung together, offering a particularly elegant, changing arrangement of the room depending on the season.
