Description
This hanging scroll radiates a festive, almost cheerful mood, depicting a brilliant red and a creamy white peony blooming together in front of a dark rock. A delicate branch with red buds arches above them, lending the composition additional dynamism.
The combination of two differently colored peonies is a device frequently used in Japanese painting to emphasize abundance and variety, while the plant itself traditionally symbolizes prosperity and grace. The fine red artist's seal next to the signature confirms the careful, professional execution of this work.
Painted on silk during the Heisei period and fitted with a wooden mounting, this kakemono displays a pictorial language that is remarkably classical and mature for its comparatively recent date of creation. With its cheerful coloring, it is excellently suited as a decorative, uplifting wall picture.
