Description

A clear stream winds its way through the picture, above which delicate maple branches in cool green spread out. Beneath them, several fish glide calmly through the water, while one of them leaps from the surface with an elegant movement. The scene captures a fleeting yet vivid moment of nature – the interplay of movement, light, and stillness.

The harmonious connection of water, foliage, and animal creates a sense of freshness and lightness typical of nature depictions of the Meiji period. The finely graded color gradients and the precise line work testify to technical mastery and a deep sensitivity for rhythm and balance.

Painted on silk, with jikusaki made of bone, dated to the Meiji period. The stamp refers to Horita Hidesō. The work comes in a signed wooden box.
