Description
A full moon stands over thatched-roof fishermen's huts on the riverbank, while below on the water a small boat with two figures glides by – a quiet night scene full of poetic atmosphere.
The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Mori Ippo (1798–1872). The moon is set as a clear, bright circle in the otherwise softly washed sky, while bamboo and hut roofs structure the foreground in fine, darker lines. The two figures in the boat are only briefly suggested, yet lend the scene a human scale.
Such moonlit river landscapes are among the most popular subjects of Japanese landscape painting, as they convey both expanse and stillness at once. Together with a second hanging scroll by the same painter, which shows an autumnal daytime scene on the same river, this painting forms a harmonious companion pair.
