Description
A few energetic brushstrokes suffice to bring to life a bamboo branch bent in the wind – a motif that has for centuries ranked among the "Four Gentlemen" of East Asian ink painting, symbolizing steadfastness as well as adaptability.
This high-contrast ink painting relies on bold, almost calligraphic strokes for the leaves and a softer, more nuanced tone for the knotted stalk, giving the plant's characteristic structure a sculptural presence. The painting bears the signature and seal of Tsubaki Chinzan.
Dating from the Meiji period, the kakemono is supplied together with its own signed wooden box – a classic, timeless motif for lovers of traditional ink painting, echoing the celebrated bamboo painting of the Edo and Meiji periods.
