Description

In pure ink painting without any color, a bamboo grove rises above rugged rock formations – a motif that has stood for resilience and modesty in East Asian painting for centuries. With a few confident brushstrokes, the painter captures the supple elegance of the bamboo leaves.

The high-contrast distribution of bold and washed-out ink tones lends the image spatial depth, while the rock formations in the lower part of the image provide a calm counterpoint. The kakemono was created during the Shôwa period (1926–1989) on paper.

Please note that the painting shows age-related damage in the pictorial area, which, however, does not diminish the charm of this unique work as an antique. The jikusaki made of wood completes the classical mounting – a piece with history for collectors of traditional ink painting.
