Makuri with Bamboo and Full Moon

In front of a subtly indicated full moon, slender bamboo stalks with their characteristic, tapering leaves sway in this Makuri with Bamboo and Full Moon – a painting not yet mounted into a Kakemono. The combination of bamboo and moon is among the most poetic motifs in East Asian painting, uniting permanence with quiet nocturnal contemplation. The bamboo leaves are rendered with quick, confident brushstrokes that capture the plant's characteristic elasticity and lightness, while the moon is indicated only subtly and reservedly as a bright circle. An accompanying calligraphic inscription adds a literary dimension to the painting, as was customary in the classical tradition of combining image and text. Since this is a Makuri, the upper and lower parts of the textile mounting are missing – the painting itself, however, remains unaffected by this and can be attractively presented, for example, in a suitable frame. For collectors of classical bamboo motifs and simple, poetic compositions, this work is an appealing choice.
