Description
In front of a half-opened lattice window sits an elegant lady in a kimono, adjusting her elaborately pinned-up hairstyle with a needle, while a flowering branch is delicately suggested in the background. The scene captures a quiet, intimate moment of women's everyday culture, a motif repeatedly taken up in Bijin-ga, the painting of beautiful women.
The shimmering tones of the kimono in green, brown, and yellow stand in charming contrast to the restrained interior, which is only suggested by the window lattice and a hint of textile pattern. The painting on silk bears the artist's signature and dates from the Meiji period.
The roller ends of the hanging scroll are made of bone, and the piece is delivered with a specially signed wooden box. A subtle work for all who are enthusiastic about the depiction of the Japanese world of women of bygone eras.
