Description

With lowered gaze and a woven basket full of red berries on her back, a young woman stands beneath a bare, autumn-colored tree – her striped kimono jacket and patterned headscarf reveal the everyday life of a countrywoman at harvest, a motif of Bijin-ga painting that seeks beauty not in courtly elegance but in quiet, industrious grace. The coloring in warm brown and ocher tones underscores the autumnal mood, while scattered red leaf remnants on the ground further emphasize the season.

The painting bears the signature and seal of the painter Keisen, is executed on silk, and was created in the Shôwa period. The scroll mounting concludes with jikusaki ends made of wood.

This narrative, warm-hearted kakemono is suited as wall decoration in the tokonoma as well as an evocative accent for the cooler season in any Japanese-inspired interior.
