Description

Restrained yet possessing great presence, the beauty depicted in this hanging scroll appears in half-profile - her gaze lowered, her elaborately arranged hair adorned with floral ornaments and kanzashi pins, the kimono rendered in warm red and orange tones with floral patterns. The fine, precise linework of the face stands in appealing contrast to the softly flowing folds of the robe's fabric.

Such bijin-ga, depictions of idealized female beauty, were among the most popular pictorial themes of the Shôwa period and often served as an expression of elegance, grace, and social ideal. The restrained color palette of the background draws the eye entirely to the figure and her elaborately designed clothing.

The hanging scroll is delivered including a wooden box. Painted on silk, this work was created in the Shôwa period and shows the meticulous attention to facial rendering and depiction of garments characteristic of the period. An atmospheric example of classical Japanese portrait painting for collectors and lovers of traditional pictorial art.
