Description

In a striking, striped kimono, a young woman stands pensively in front of a shoji lattice, while a red paper lantern on the floor beside her provides a warm accent of color. The slightly turned posture and lowered gaze lend the scene a quiet, introspective atmosphere, typical of Bijin-ga painting of the early Shôwa period.

The high-contrast stripes of the kimono in orange and dark tones set a lively accent against the restrained interior, which is only suggested through lattice windows and hints of bamboo in the background. The painting bears the stamp and signature of the artist Chigusa Kitani, whose works are known for their fine, elegant depiction of women.

Executed on silk and fitted with plastic roller ends, this hanging scroll is an atmospheric example of 20th-century Japanese interior painting – ideal for collectors interested in contemporary-looking Bijin-ga art.
