Description
A small bird flies low, tilted between swaying blades of grass, while below it pale pink hibiscus blossoms and blue bellflowers stand in full bloom – a vivid snapshot of late-summer nature. The hibiscus blossom, also known in Japan as fuyo, has been a popular motif in poetry and painting since the Heian period, as its flowers often bloom brilliantly for only a single day.
The painting on silk combines fine, naturalistic detail in the blossoms and plumage with loosely rendered blades of grass that suggest the movement of the wind. The picture bears the signature of Seido, visible at the lower edge of the picture.
Dating from the Shôwa period, this kakemono is delivered including a wooden box. A cheerful, colorful motif that vividly illustrates the diversity of classical Japanese bird-and-flower painting.
