Description
A small bird has settled upside down on a hanging pine branch, its needles rendered in countless fine brushstrokes – a bravura piece of reduced ink painting.
The composition draws its tension from the contrast between the strong, curving branch and the delicacy of the small bird, while large parts of the picture surface are deliberately left empty. Pine and bird are among the classic motifs of sumi-e painting, with the pine traditionally symbolizing constancy and long life.
The work bears the signature of Akiaki Okamoto and is delivered including a wooden box. Created in the Shôwa period, this kakemono is a stylish example of classical Japanese ink painting.
