Description
Brilliant red maple leaves cover a gnarled branch reaching diagonally into the picture, on which a small bird has settled – a classic autumn motif that captures the brief, intense blooming season of the Japanese maple (Momiji). The shimmering red and orange tones of the leaves contrast appealingly with the subdued, blue-green brocade edge of the mounting and the light silk ground on which the motif was executed.
The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of the painter Seigyu Kitakami and dates from the Shôwa period. It is delivered including the accompanying wooden box, which was typically used for storing and protecting the artwork and at the same time provides clues to the piece's provenance and esteem.
With its clear, harmonious pictorial language, this hand-painted unique work is particularly suited for autumn decoration in the tokonoma, but can equally serve as a year-round accent in a Japanese-inspired interior. For collectors of traditional kachô-ga painting, it is an appealing find.
