Description

A single bird with finely rendered plumage rests on a gnarled pine branch, while a few brilliant red maple leaves have caught among the twigs beside it. The contrast between the bold, dark pine needle painting and the warm autumn red lends the image a calm, almost meditative atmosphere.

Pine and bird are among the classic motifs of Japanese bird-and-flower painting and symbolize permanence and the brief blossoming of the seasons. The work was created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989) using a fine brush technique on paper.

The jikusaki of the hanging scroll is made of bone, lending the classical mounting a particularly refined touch. A tasteful kakemono for all who appreciate small, focused nature motifs in Japanese painting.
