Description
With calm, meditative brushwork, the head of Bodhidharma is depicted here, its gently curved lines and contemplative expression unfolding a quiet, contemplative effect. Above the figure, a multi-line calligraphy complements the image – a poetic verse that tells of birds, faded blossoms, and the lingering scent of wood, thus celebrating both the transience and the enduring persistence of nature.
The reduced palette of black and soft gray tones underscores the spiritual depth of Zenga painting, in which the aim is less exact depiction than the direct conveyance of inner calm. Signature and red seal at the upper edge of the image point to the painter's long-standing artistic experience.
Executed on paper with roller ends made of bone, this hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period. With its quiet, poetic character, it is a particularly personal piece for admirers of Zen-inspired calligraphy and pictorial art.
