Description
Clear and powerfully rendered characters on this kakemono name the shrines dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, one of the most important deities of Shintoism. Such calligraphies were often created on the occasion of a shrine visit and served as a personal memento of religious veneration and the pilgrimage associated with it.
The characters are written in even, disciplined strokes, suggesting a practiced hand familiar with the formal rules of shrine calligraphy. Red seals accompany the characters, lending the composition additional weight as well as a solemn, official quality.
Written on paper and mounted in an understated, cream-colored border with fine vine decoration, this hanging scroll combines religious significance with calligraphic elegance. A piece for collectors interested in the spiritual dimension of Japanese calligraphic art.
