Description

This kakemono from the Showa period shows a pure calligraphy: the two large, powerfully written characters 佛心 (Busshin, "Buddha heart" or "Buddha spirit") dominate the surface, the vertical stroke of 佛 running almost the full length in a single sweep.

Beside them, in smaller characters, stands 南無阿弥陀佛 (Namu Amida Butsu), the nembutsu of the Pure Land schools (Jōdo), with which the faithful invoke the Buddha Amida. The sheet bears the signature and seal reading approximately 彬堂謹書 ("respectfully written"); the reading of the name is not certain.

The plastic jikusaki round off the kakemono simply. An expressive hanging scroll for lovers of Buddhist calligraphy that unfolds its full effect in a quiet room.
