Description
In even, powerful characters, this kakemono bears the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyo), one of the most important texts of Mahayana Buddhism, which summarizes the teaching of the emptiness of all phenomena. The clear, disciplined brushwork of the calligraphy testifies to great practice and inner calm.
The work bears the signature and seal of Nanyo Ishizaki and was created in the Shôwa period on fine washi paper; the jikusaki is made of metal. The hanging scroll is delivered in a specially signed wooden box, which further underscores the significance and value of this calligraphic unique work.
Calligraphies of religious texts such as the Heart Sutra have for centuries been regarded in Japan as an expression of spiritual practice and meditative concentration. For collectors of calligraphic art and those interested in Buddhism, this kakemono is a meaningful, handwritten testament to this centuries-old tradition.
