Description

This kakemono relies on four oversized characters, whose powerful, almost abstract-looking forms fill the entire pictorial space. The characters 行仁義事 mean 'Practice Humanity (仁) and Justice (義)', and the realization as monumental large script lends the maxim a very distinct, physically palpable force.

The broad, rich brushstrokes leave hardly any white space between the individual strokes, creating an almost graphic, striking effect. This form of monumental calligraphy was deliberately chosen to make a statement not merely legible, but downright physically perceptible. As a print edition, this form of large-scale calligraphy made an impressive maxim accessible to a broader audience.

For collectors interested in the graphic and space-filling side of Japanese calligraphy, this kakemono is an expressive addition.
