Description

"Chūkō" – Loyalty and Reverence: these two values, loyalty toward one's lord and community as well as respect toward one's parents, were among the central virtues of traditional Japanese ethics, especially during the age of the samurai. The powerful calligraphy expresses this attitude with a few energetic brushstrokes that leave no doubt about its resolve.

Rendered on paper in a dynamic, slightly cursive script, the composition reveals a confident, practiced hand. A small signature and a red seal in the lower left attribute the work to the Meiji period, making it one of the older pieces in the collection.

Fitted with rollers made of bone and mounted in an understated, floral-patterned border, this kakemono is an expressive testament to traditional Japanese values for collectors of historical calligraphy, one that captivates through its powerful visual impact even apart from its meaning.
