Description

This hanging scroll shows the lines 江月照 松風吹, a well-known Zen saying from the Shōdōka (證道歌) of Yongjia Xuanjue: the moon shines over the river, the wind blows through the pines – two images of quiet nocturnal beauty that merge into a calm overall mood. The brushwork is clear and balanced, with evenly distributed characters that match the contemplative character of the poem without slipping into mere decoration.

The moon and the pine are among the most frequently paired motifs in East Asian poetry, since both stand for permanence, clarity, and a beauty that remains constant across the seasons.

Such a calligraphy hanging scroll is particularly well suited to quiet, contemplative spaces, where the poetic connection of light, wind, and nature can come into its own.
