Description

A single-line calligraphy (ichigyōmono) of eight powerfully sweeping characters (春照一青山籠雪花), accompanied by a two-line date and signature and three red seals, carries the poetic meaning "Spring light shines on a green mountain still veiled in snowflakes" – an image of fleeting, barely graspable beauty.

The brushstroke combines broad, flowing areas with an energetic finishing stroke tapering off to the lower right, lending the characters a buoyant dynamism.

The character 籠 does not mean "basket" here but is used as a verb meaning "to veil" or "to envelop": the verse captures the turning of the seasons – the mountain still lies under snow while the light of spring is already falling on it. The brush traces with their dry, fraying strokes identify this hanging scroll as a hand-written unique piece – a lovely way to surround oneself with a poetically charged calligraphy motif.
