Description
This hanging scroll appears calm and forceful at the same time, its characters flowing across the paper in dense, energetic cursive script. Even at first glance, the composition conveys a meditative concentration characteristic of fine calligraphy.
In terms of content, this is a philosophical statement, of the kind often chosen in the Japanese calligraphy tradition to express an inner attitude or a piece of life wisdom. Such sayings were frequently composed by scholars, monks, or educated persons and hung for contemplation in the tokonoma, the traditional alcove of Japanese living spaces.
The hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period and is mounted with rods made of wood, the support consisting of paper. The bold ink brushwork and clear composition make this hanging scroll an impressive example of traditional Japanese calligraphy, well suited as a stylish focal point in a quiet living space.
