Description

The name of the venerable Shinto shrine "Shiogama Jinja" in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture adorns this kakemono in powerful, clearly legible calligraphy. Shrines like this one have been regarded as spiritual centers for centuries, and the written mention of their name was traditionally considered a sign of reverence and a remembrance of a visit or pilgrimage.

The characters are executed with a confident, even brush stroke, with bold and fine lines alternating, lending the calligraphy expressive power despite its simplicity. A red seal confirms the authorship and rounds off the composition harmoniously, resulting in a coherent overall image.

Written on paper and framed in a restrained, olive-colored border with a fine vine pattern, this hanging scroll presents itself in good condition. It is a quiet testament to Japanese shrine culture and an appealing addition for collectors of religiously inspired calligraphy and traditional hanging scrolls.
