Description

Japanese calligraphy is masterful at conjuring entire landscapes through characters alone. This kakemono bears the verse 夏雲多奇峰, attributed to the Chinese poet Tao Yuanming – "Summer clouds form many wondrous peaks" – and lets towering summer clouds emerge before the mind's eye, themselves resembling mountain peaks.

The bold, at times broadly applied brushstrokes alternate with finer lines, creating a rhythm that echoes the movement of clouds and mountains. The verse is written in a clear, highly legible regular script (kaisho) that combines expressive strength with strict legibility; the work is signed 延子書 (Nobuko sho).

Such a work is excellently suited to the wall niche of a Japanese-inspired living space, especially during the summer months, when motifs with cloud and mountain themes were traditionally preferred. For collectors of Japanese calligraphy, this kakemono offers a successful union of linguistic imagery and painterly gesture.
