Description
With just a few broad brushstrokes, this kakemono creates the unmistakable figure of Bodhidharma, the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism. A single sweeping stroke outlines the head and robe, while bushy eyebrows, a wild beard, and the penetrating gaze are suggested with brief but confident strokes.
This reduced mode of depiction stands in the tradition of Zen painting, in which mastery of the brush and the immediacy of the gesture matter more than naturalistic accuracy. Bodhidharma is regarded as a symbol of perseverance, meditation, and unshakable determination and is one of the most popular motifs in Japanese ink painting.
Created in the Heisei period, the image is painted on paper and mounted in fine brocade fabric with golden cloud motifs, the roller rods are made of wood. Signature and red seal of the painter at the lower edge of the image make this kakemono an atmospheric unique work for lovers of Zen Buddhist art.
