Kakemono Figs and Grapes

With few, confidently placed brushstrokes, this kakemono shows two sliced figs beside a lush bunch of pale green grapes. The delicate pinkish-violet coloring of the fig flesh contrasts appealingly with the cool green of the grapes, lending the composition a pleasant freshness.

The shapes are rendered with round, soft contours, while fine glazes suggest the spatial curvature of the fruit. A red artist's seal in the upper right rounds off the reduced composition, focused on the essential, in a harmonious way. Fruit still lifes like this one are among the popular secondary subjects of Japanese painting and represent abundance, enjoyment, and the appreciation of nature's gifts.

For collectors who, alongside classic landscape and figure motifs, also appreciate smaller, decorative still lifes, this kakemono, Figs and Grapes, is a charming addition.
