Description
Four hanging scrolls, four moods: the first shows a water wheel on a riverbank amid delicately blooming cherry trees for spring, the second a lively mountain stream between fresh greenery for summer, the third a waterfall bordered by colorful autumn foliage, and the fourth a deeply snow-covered winter landscape with frost-covered conifers. Together the four pictures form a complete cycle of the seasons.
In Japan it is tradition to hang only the kakemono matching the current season in the tokonoma, keeping the others carefully stored away – an expression of the close connection with the changing of the seasons that renews the living space throughout the year. All four pictures are executed in fine hand-painting on silk, bear a matching border, and clearly originate from the same hand of the Shōwa period.
The complete set is delivered in a wooden box (tomobako) signed by the artist, in which all four hanging scrolls can be stored together. A rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a cohesive ensemble of Japanese landscape painting in this completeness.
