Description

This landscape painting, executed in fine ink painting technique, dates from the Shôwa period and depicts a gently rounded mountain peak above a wide, mist-shrouded expanse of water. A small islet with wind-bent pines and a lone fisherman in his boat lend a quiet, poetic accent to the otherwise almost uninhabited scenery.

The mountain – reminiscent of Fuji in its characteristic silhouette – has long been regarded as one of the most important landscape motifs of Japan and stands symbolically for permanence, sublimity, and the veneration of nature. The restrained ink technique, with its fine gradations of gray, lets mountain and water merge into one another, creating a particularly calm, meditative mood.

The motif was painted by hand on silk, and the hanging scroll is fitted with jikusaki made of bone. Signature and red artist's seal at the lower edge of the image mark this kakemono as a unique work. A timeless landscape painting for collectors who appreciate the quiet sublimity of classical Japanese ink painting.
