Description

In gentle mist, the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji rises above a vast landscape of villages, a pagoda, and maple trees in autumn colors - a classic composition that unites Japanese landscape painting with the veneration of the sacred mountain. The soft ink washes create an atmospheric depth that makes the viewer feel as though gazing into the distance.

The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Kano Ryusetsu and was presumably created still in the Meiji period, an era in which traditional landscape painting found renewed popularity alongside the opening of Japan. Mount Fuji as a recurring motif stands for permanence, sublimity, and the spiritual core of Japanese nature worship.

Painted on silk and fitted with a knob made of bone, the kakemono is delivered including the signed wooden box. An evocative antique piece for all who are enthusiastic about the long tradition of Japanese mountain landscapes.
