Description
In a faint, hazy distance, the soft silhouette of Fuji nearly dissolves, while in the foreground a dense ensemble of gnarled, wind-swept pines dominates the composition. Looking closely between the roots of the trees, small figures can be discerned, lending a human presence to the vast landscape space.
This compositional shift – the sacred mountain as a reticent presence, the pines as the actual main motif – shows an appealing variant of the classical Fuji image and deliberately draws the eye to the permanence and strength of the evergreen trees.
The painting bears the signature and seal of Kano Naganobu and was created in the Meiji period. Painted on silk and fitted with a jikusaki made of bone, this hand-painted unique work is a quiet, atmospheric landscape composition.
