Description

Calm and concentration speak from every line of this calligraphy, which reproduces the complete text of the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyō) – a central teaching text of Mahayana Buddhism concerning the emptiness of all phenomena. The even script, set line by line in clear order, conveys the years of practice required for such execution.

Executed on paper, this work bears the signature and seal of Toyoharu Araki from the Shōwa period. The roller of the hanging scroll is fitted with fixtures made of plastic.

The writing of Buddhist sutras in Japan was traditionally not only an expression of religious devotion, but was itself regarded as a form of meditation in which body, mind, and brush were to become one. Hung in the tokonoma, this kakemono invites quiet contemplation and represents a meaningful piece of traditional calligraphy for collectors of Japanese calligraphy as well as for those interested in Buddhism.
