Description

Column by column the Heart Sutra runs across the pale paper, from the title at the upper right to the repetition of the title at the left edge. The characters stand in even rows, each clearly legible on its own, and yet not stiff: the writer lets the strokes swell slightly and gives some of them a soft, supple finish. The result is a calm rhythm that comes close to the spoken recitation of the text.

No Buddhist text is copied more often in Japan. Copying the sutra is regarded as an exercise in concentration and as a meritorious act, and accordingly the signature closes with the word for reverent writing: Suzuki Yūseki, followed by two red seals. Before it stands a date in the summer of the year Shōwa 52, that is, 1977.

The calligraphy on paper measures 53 × 185 cm and already shows in its mounting the rank accorded to the text: blue-green brocade with large peony scrolls frames the sheet, while a narrow red gold brocade at top and bottom sets a strong accent. The jikusaki are made of wood, and an inscribed wooden box is included. The scroll suits any season and is as well suited to a tokonoma as to a quiet room in your own home.
