Description

A plum branch (ume) densely covered in blossoms, its boughs tracing fine, sweeping lines across the right half of the image, while a three-column haiku inscription occupies the left – a classic motif for the Japanese spring. The individual blossoms are rendered with delicate contour lines and luminous touches of color in white, yellow, and soft pink, while dark ink accents at the branch forks and bud bases lend structure to the composition. The fine, light green lines running between the branches suggest additional young shoots or tendrils, reinforcing the impression of freshness and emerging growth.

The inscription is Bashō's haiku 梅が香に のつと日の出る 山路かな (Ume ga ka ni / notto hi no deru / yamaji kana): "In the scent of plum blossoms the sun suddenly rises – a mountain path," signed 芭蕉 (Bashō); on the right, the painting bears the signature 秋水 (Shūsui) with seal. In Japan the plum blossom is regarded as the first herald of spring, standing for steadfastness and new beginnings – an image especially valued during plum blossom season or as a lasting reminder of spring.
