Description
Densely arranged one after another on this hanging scroll are the characters of the Heart Sutra, written in a calm, easily legible calligraphy that renders the religious text in its full length. Striking is the clear, almost architectural order of the individual columns, which offers the viewer a structured approach to this otherwise complex Buddhist text. At the end of the lines of text are the signature and red seal of the calligrapher.
The work was created in the Shôwa period and is executed on paper. The jikusaki made of wood completes the traditional, restrained appearance of the hanging scroll. The Heart Sutra is among the most frequently copied texts of Japanese Buddhism and was recorded calligraphically over the centuries by monks and laypeople alike, both as a spiritual exercise and as an independent work of art.
For those who appreciate Japanese calligraphy and Buddhist art, this hanging scroll represents a stylish and at the same time meaningful collector's item, one that is excellently suited to a quiet, contemplatively designed room.
