Description

Falling maple leaves in warm shades of orange and red accompany three small birds gathering, chirping, on a slender branch – a scene full of movement and sound that makes the transition into autumn palpable. The gnarled branch form, rendered in bold ink, contrasts appealingly with the delicately colored leaves and the soft plumage of the birds.

The hanging scroll is painted on paper, the axis fitted with fittings made of wood, and the work was created in the Meiji period. The depiction of small songbirds amid autumn foliage is among the most popular themes of Kachō-ga, the classical Japanese bird-and-flower painting, in which the transience of the seasons is captured with painterly lightness.

With its lively interplay of color, movement, and quiet poetry, this hanging scroll is especially well suited for hanging in the tokonoma during the autumn months and is an atmospheric addition to any collection of traditional Japanese painting.
