Description

Delicate and almost miniature in scale, two courtly figures are depicted here in the style of Hina Dolls, as they are traditionally displayed for the Girls' Festival (Hinamatsuri) in March. The front figure wears a purple-red robe ensemble with a floral pattern, while the rear, larger figure is wrapped in a bright pink outer robe with pine decor and adorned with a small crown.

The colors are applied in fine, glazing layers, while the contours of the faces and hairstyles were precisely traced with the thinnest of brushes – a painting technique that requires much patience and a sure eye. The figures are surrounded by a generous, almost empty picture field, causing the small scene to float like a precious miniature at the center of the image.

The painting on paper is framed by a pink silk border with a delicate diamond pattern and a moss-green outer silk, created in the Shôwa period. Scattered small age spots in the paper bear witness to the time this hanging scroll has already passed through. Motifs related to Hinamatsuri are rarely found in the trade, making this piece an original, festive-looking collector's item.
