Description
Vast, misty stillness characterizes this ink landscape, in which a small sailboat glides alone across a calm expanse of water, while in the foreground bold, almost wild brushstrokes suggest dark rock formations and gnarled trees. The contrast between the restrained, washed distance and the energetic, dripping ink splashes in the foreground lends the composition an unusual tension typical of expressive forms of Suiboku painting.
The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of the painter Kano Yoshinobu and was hand-painted on paper during the Meiji period. The powerful, almost abstract brushwork suggests a skilled painter with a sure sense of reduction and expression.
As a calm yet lively landscape motif, this kakemono is well suited to the tokonoma or a workspace, where it creates a contemplative, nature-connected atmosphere. For collectors of classical Japanese ink painting, this unique work with its expressive pictorial language is a particularly appealing piece.
