Description
With flowing white beard, high forehead, and a staff in hand, Jurojin, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, appears in restrained ink painting with delicate touches of color. He is accompanied by a crane, whose reddish crown provides the single strong spot of color in the painting and which, like Jurojin himself, represents longevity and wisdom. The reduced, assured brushwork and the deliberate avoidance of excessive detail draw the eye entirely to the figure of the sage and his companion animal.
The painting bears the signature and seal of Kano Shunobu and was created in the Meiji period. Painted on silk and mounted within a border featuring a floral scroll pattern, this hand-painted unique work is counted among the popular auspicious motifs of Japanese painting.
Please note that the secondary fabric of the mounting is fragile due to age and should be handled with care.
