Description

Jurojin is one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese mythology and represents a long, fulfilled life. In this kakemono he appears as a tall, bearded figure with a bald head and plain, light-colored robe, his arms hidden in wide sleeves, depicted standing on clouds.

The restrained coloring and the calm, upright posture of the figure underscore the dignified character of the god. Unlike some depictions in which Jurojin is accompanied by a deer or crane, this work concentrates entirely on the figure itself, lending it particular weight.

Images of the Seven Lucky Gods, especially individual depictions such as this one, were traditionally hung on festive occasions such as the New Year's festival to invoke prosperity and a long life. For collectors of Japanese mythology or lovers of classical depictions of gods, this kakemono is an atmospheric and meaningful choice.
