Description

Perched on a weathered wooden post sits a kingfisher with a brightly orange-colored breast, gazing watchfully to the side, while its strong beak and finely rendered feathers lend the motif great vividness. The warm, golden-toned background further emphasizes the coloring of the small bird.

The kakemono was created in the Shôwa period, hand-painted on silk, the jikusaki is made of wood. The hanging scroll is delivered in a specially matching wooden box that protects the delicate work and facilitates its storage.

In Japanese pictorial tradition, the kingfisher is regarded as a symbol of grace and vigilance and is often depicted in calm, nature-inspired compositions. This finely painted kakemono is excellently suited for lovers of kachô-ga painting who are looking for an evocative, richly detailed bird motif of high painterly quality.
